New Year’s Eve celebrations - Organization

Despite the fact that the event of New Year’s Eve celebrations in the centre of Bratislava which began in 1999 has so far avoided any significant negative incidents, the organizers have nevertheless prepared clear safety instructions for all revellers based on the organization of similar large cultural and sports events around the world.

Individual zones of entertainment will be accessible only through certain entry points (marked by a green arrow on the map):

Michalská Street Zámočnícka Street

Michalská Street Biela Street

Michalská Street Sedlárska Street

Ventúrska Street Zelená Street

Ventúrska Street Panská Street

Mostová Street Palackého Street

Palackého street Medená Street

Gorkého Street (Post bank)

Jesenského Street (Volksbank)

Laurinská Street Uršulínska Street

Františkánska Street (main post office)

Stewards at these entry points to the celebrations will carry out preventive checks from 7.00 pm to midnight. We do not recommend that visitors to the celebrations bring with them glass bottles, metal or wooden sticks, or fireworks. Entry shall also be refused to persons apparently under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Fixed barriers without entry to visitors will be at Kostolná and Uršulínska Streets. In addition, Klobučnícka and Nedbalova Streets, Radnična Street and Primaciálne Square entry points will only be accessible to service and technical support for the celebrations programme.

Several hundred stewards will oversee the organization and public safety of the event in the streets of the historical centre. The organizational staff will be headquartered at the Primacialny Palace on Primacialne Square, where a Red Cross first aid centre and centre-point for lost children will be located. In an emergency, rapid-response ambulances will be stationed at Hviezdoslavovo Square and Primacialne Square.

A unit from the Bratislava Old Town Voluntary fire crew will take care of fire safety. Their vehicle will be parked at Frantiskanske Square.

Catering stands will be located in two zones on Frantiskanske Square and Hviezdoslavovo Square totaling approx. 25 stands with refreshments and drinks.

The organisers have arranged for 30 environmentally-friendly WCs, which visitors can find on Frantiskanske Square and Hviezdoslavovo Square. Besides these, public hygiene facilities will also be available at Palackého Street.

The organizers recommend that visitors to the celebrations primarily use mass public transport to travel into the city centre. Following negotiations with Bratislava Public Transport Authority DPB, public transport operations from individual town districts to and from the centre will be increased for 31 December 2006 and 1 January 2007.

During the New Year’s programme, the following transport restrictions will be in force:

Cars will not be able to enter the entertainments zone from 09:00 hrs on 31 December 2006 to 05:00 hours 1 January 2007. Vehicles parked in the streets within the zones will be towed away.

On 31 January 2006 from 19:00 hours to 03:00 hours the following day Mostová Street will be completely closed, including for trams of the public transport.

The road between NewBridge and Šafárikovo Square will be closed for private transport from 23:00 hours to approx. 00:30 hours due to the midnight fireworks display.

Access to the Hotel Radisson SAS Carlton will be possible via Kúpeľná Street and Palackého Street.

The Police will carefully supervise the flow of traffic on NewBridge before and during the midnight fireworks display in order to prevent pedestrians gaining access to the bridge’s roadway.
