March – June 2007 David Hockney
This year the Slovak National Gallery will put on display 87 works of graphic art from the contemporary “star” of the world of fine art, David Hockney. Although the artist himself has said that he is not a graphic artist, but a painter who in his lifetime produced also several works of graphic art. Despite the fact that the graphic works of Hockney are essentially a rarity, he has contributed greatly to fine art of the second half of the 20th century.
Hockney comes from the generation of British artists who at the beginning of the 1960s reacted to the Pop Art movement. Yet it was only Hockney who managed to retain his reputation to the present day as a constantly rebelling star, who by his life and artwork provoked those not just from professional circles.

June – SeptemberCULTURAL SUMMER
An array of performances of artists from Slovakia and abroad spread over 3 months from mid June to mid September. Individual events are organised into thematic cycles.
The cycle International Bratislava presents dancing and singing groups from far and wide. Young people particularly enjoy the popular ‘Letný bažant kinematograf’, which presents the best of contemporary Czech and Slovak films over the course of 5 evenings right on the Main Square. As part of Theatre Week the courtyards of the Old Town Hall and Bratislava Castle are home to performances, including those of Radošinské naivné divadlo. The distinctive folk traditions from various corners of Slovakia will be presented during Traditional Folk Evenings.
The Cultural Summer does not forget the little ones. As part of the series Music and the Danube performances will be given by flamenco, country and other groups on excursion boats. There are also musical cruises specially organised for families with children.
The theatre shows for children are organised as part of the cycle Fairytale City Hall (Rozprávková radnica). Once a week in Bratislava Zoo there will be Family ZOO school. Each year a special children’s steam train leaves the Transport Museum in Bratislava, giving children a chance to see how people travelled in the past, as well as an excellent day out away from the city.
The programme entitled Live Streets is an invitation from the Travelling Fencing Theatre Group (Potulna bratislavska šermiarsko-divadelna spoločnost) to take to the Old Town streets – their authentic shows are performed once a week. Days of Masters at the castle represents a festival of traditional crafts and regional cultures held on the grounds of Bratislava Castle. This international jazz festival is one of the biggest events of its kind in Central Europe. Bratislava Jazz Days will be held for the 33rd time in 2007. Every year there are performances from some of the great names in jazz. Last year the festival saw the likes of Kenny Garrett, Richard Bona, Ignacio Berroa, Anna Maria Jopek, Matt Bianco, and Matt Marshak taking part. From bands we must mention formations like Rhythm Desperados (Czech R.), Random Goes Brazil (Austria), the experimental No Jazz (France), Longital, or the Three Pianos (SR). In 2007 we can look forward to other great jazz legends and experimental formations, which will definitely produce a lot of great music.
Bratislava Jazz Days was established in 1975 when a group of jazz enthusiasts organised the 1st festival at PKO. Initially jazz musicians from former Czechoslovakia and the surrounding socialist countries played at the event. Already in its third year they were joined by formations from Austria and Finland, and then in 1979 by the first American trumpeter Lee Harper. At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s the BJD had already become a major professional festival.
This year the festival will be led once more by the renowned Slovak jazz singer Peter Lipa. Over the three days you can enjoy performances from musicians and formations like Chick Corea & Gary Burton, Oregon, John McLaughlin, Stanley Clarke, Bobby McFerrin, Flora Purim & Airto Moreira, Lester Bowie & Bras Fantasy, or Billy Cobham. The official programme has not yet been published.

It offers the chance for mutual enrichment, inspiration and the establishment of good contacts. What’s more, the Festival board tries each year to invite Spanish artists and so present Flamenco to the Slovak public directly from its cultural source. Their involvement is also a great inspiration for the other performers, as it provides them with a source of new ideas and impulses from which to draw long after the festival is over.
Various accompanying events are organised each year parallel to the festival: lectures, exhibitions, courses in dance, guitar and percussion, which complement the spirit of the festival.

November 2007Festival NEXT
Next is an English word that this time signifies a combination of “new” and “experimental”. This determines the dramaturgical focus of this international festival of music and audio art, which has been organised by the civil association Atrakt Art / Bratislava since December 2000. Since that time Next has regularly presented innovative foreign and domestic performances, which use contemporary vehicles with the energy of rock, the improvisation of jazz and the structure of classical music, but which at the same time move away from style conventions and go beyond established borders. Another important goal is to introduce musicians and bands that have not yet concerted in Slovakia, and to initiate premieres of domestic projects and create new opportunities for co-operation.

The main organiser of the BHS is the Slovak Philharmonic.
Once more we will welcome renowned world orchestras, for instance, from neighbouring Vienna - Wiener Symphoniker with conductor Fabio Luisi, RAI Torino, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden un Freiburg with star personalities Gidon Kremer and Heinrich Schiff, Orchester Philharmonique from Monte Carlo with the conductor Emmanuel Krivin and pianist Nikolai Lugansky. From distant Japan we will welcome an orchestra from the town of Kanazawa with virtuoso violinist Shlomo Mintz.
The opening concert belongs to the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the excellent conductor Vladimir Fedosejev, who after years of absence will be welcomed once more to Bratislava. One of the gems of the festival will certainly be the trio of Berezovski-Machtin-Kniazev.
Youth – that is the name of one of the sections of the BHS because the festival includes the international competition New talent – Nadácia SPP Prize, which year after year sees more than 20 young talented musicians from all over Europe and overseas compete for the coveted prize. This competition is prepared by BHS in co-operation with Slovak Radio and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) based in Geneva.
Thirty concerts will be put on for your pleasure at the 43rd year of the BHS in 2007.
