Every Tuesday evening in August there will be a free music concert, sponsored by local TV channel JOJ, at the square at the Eurovea shopping and entertainment complex. Genres will change from week to week: the first concert, on 3 August, will be by the Mango Salseros salsa band; the second, featuring classical works as well as tunes from musicals, will be performed by the Bratislava Violin Orchestra.
Eurovea will also be the venue for a series of Sunday afternoon musical processions, including one by practitioners of capoeira, the Brazilian fusion of martial arts, music and dance, on 29 August, from 4pm.
For jazz-lovers, Jazz Under the Tower is a series of weekly concerts by top local performers. It takes place at 8pm every Wednesday evening during August, in the St John of Nepomuk courtyard of the Primatial Palace. The first two events feature the Czech Roma musician Ida Kelarová (on 4 August), and Slovak jazz legend Peter Lipa and his band (on 11 August). Admission is between €6 and €7
The Craftsmen Days 2010, organised by the ÚĽUV Centre for Folk Art Production, promises to be one of the city's major events in August. It takes place in the streets and squares of Bratislava's old town on the weekend of 28-29 August, providing a taste of Slovakia's folk crafts and culture, and featuring craftsmen and -women showcasing their skills for visitors. We'll be posting more details about this event nearer the time.
For the martially-inclined, the Devín Festival of Historical Fencing, Music, Dance and Crafts 2010 is a one-day event being held at Devín Castle from 10am on Saturday, 28 August.
And a series of evening events will temporarily interrupt the calm of the reading garden next to Michael's Gate, including a Dixieland band from 5pm on Thursday, 26 August.
